Mahakaleshwar Temple
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
Significance
The 3rd Jyotirlinga and the only south-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga among the 12. The lingam is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), deriving currents of power (shakti) from within itself. Ujjain is one of the 7 Sapta Puri (sacred cities) and was the prime meridian of ancient Indian geography.
Legend & Story
One of the oldest temples in India, referenced in pre-Gupta era texts. Destroyed by Iltutmish in 1234 CE. Rebuilt by Marathas in the 18th century, current structure by Ranoji Shinde. The Bhasma Aarti (pre-dawn aarti with sacred ash) is one of the most dramatic rituals in Hinduism — performed with fresh cremation ash.
