Significance

One of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture. The temple has 14 gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest reaching 52 meters, covered with thousands of colorful sculptures. The temple was nominated for the New 7 Wonders of the World. It is the cultural heart of Madurai — a 2,500-year-old city.

Legend & Story

According to legend, Meenakshi was born with three breasts and a prophecy that the third would disappear when she met her future husband. She became a fierce warrior queen. When she met Shiva (Sundareswarar), the third breast vanished. Their divine wedding is celebrated annually as Meenakshi Thirukalyanam.
