Savitri and Satyavan

MahabharataDevotion Conquers Death

Princess Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband despite a sage's warning that he would die within a year. When the destined day arrived, Satyavan collapsed while chopping wood. Yama, the god of death, appeared and drew out his soul. Savitri followed Yama as he walked away with Satyavan's spirit. "Turn back, mortal. No one follows Death," Yama warned. But Savitri kept walking. Impressed by her devotion, Yama offered boons — anything except Satyavan's life. Savitri asked for her father-in-law's eyesight, then his lost kingdom. Finally, she asked for a hundred sons. Yama granted it without thinking. Then Savitri said, "How can I have sons without my husband?" Yama realized he had been outwitted by her devotion and intelligence. Laughing with admiration, he restored Satyavan's life. Love, wit, and courage had defeated Death itself.
