Jatayu's Sacrifice
Jatayu was an ancient vulture king and a friend of Rama's father. When Ravana kidnapped Sita in his flying chariot, Jatayu saw them passing over the forest. Though old and frail, he did not hesitate. He flew up and blocked Ravana's path. "Release her, villain! She is the wife of Rama!" Jatayu cried, attacking with his talons and beak. A fierce battle erupted in the sky. Despite his age, Jatayu fought bravely, damaging Ravana's chariot and wounding him. But Ravana was too powerful and cut Jatayu's wings with his sword. Jatayu fell to earth, mortally wounded but alive. When Rama found him, the dying bird told him Ravana had taken Sita southward. Rama held Jatayu like his own father and performed his last rites. Jatayu's sacrifice gave Rama the clue he needed.
