The Golden Deer Illusion

RamayanaBeware of Temptation

During their forest exile, a shimmering golden deer appeared near Rama's hermitage. Sita was enchanted. "Please catch it for me!" she begged. Lakshmana was suspicious. "No deer in nature is made of gold. This must be a demon's trick," he warned. But Sita's desire was strong, and Rama could not refuse her. He chased the deer deep into the forest. When his arrow struck it, the deer transformed into the demon Maricha, who cried out in Rama's voice, "O Lakshmana! O Sita!" The plan was Ravana's. Hearing the cry, Sita forced Lakshmana to leave her and go help Rama. The moment she was alone, Ravana appeared disguised as a sage and kidnapped her. What began as desire for a beautiful illusion led to the greatest separation of the epic. The golden deer was the trap, and desire was the bait.

The Moral

Not everything that glitters is real. Desire for the extraordinary can blind us to obvious dangers.

Try This!

Next time you desperately want something, pause and ask: is this a genuine need or a 'golden deer' distraction?
