The Frog King and the Snake

PanchatantraBeware of Dangerous Alliances

Gangadatta, king of the frogs, was in a bitter feud with rival frogs in his own well. In foolish anger, he climbed out and invited a large snake to come eat his enemies. "I will show you which frogs to eat and which to spare," he promised. The snake happily moved into the well and devoured the rival frogs. But when the enemies were gone, the snake was still hungry. "I have no more rivals for you," said Gangadatta nervously. "Then feed me your own subjects," hissed the snake. One by one, the snake ate every frog in the well — Gangadatta's friends, family, and finally Gangadatta himself. The frog who invited destruction into his own home became its last victim. No one was left to tell the tale.

The Moral

Never invite danger into your home to solve a temporary problem. A short-term ally can become a permanent threat.

Try This!

Think of a time you solved a problem in a way that created a bigger one. What would you do differently?
