Abhimanyu and the Chakravyuha

MahabharataCourage Against All Odds

During the Kurukshetra war, the Kauravas formed the Chakravyuha — a deadly spinning labyrinth of soldiers. Only Arjuna knew how to break out of it, but he was lured away. His sixteen-year-old son Abhimanyu had learned how to enter the formation while still in his mother's womb, but Arjuna was interrupted before teaching the exit. Abhimanyu knew the risk. "I can break in but may not come out," he told Yudhishthira. Yet with the army pinned and no other option, the boy warrior charged in alone. He fought like a lion, defeating maharathis and shattering line after line of defense. But the formation sealed behind him. Six great warriors broke the rules of war and attacked him simultaneously. His bow broke, his chariot shattered, yet Abhimanyu fought with a chariot wheel as his final weapon. He fell at last, a boy who chose certain death over cowardice.
