Raksha Bandhan

रक्षा बंधन

August 12, 2026

Significance

Sisters tie a sacred thread (rakhi) on their brothers' wrists, praying for their well-being. Brothers promise to protect their sisters. The festival celebrates the bond of love and duty between siblings. Falls on the full moon (Purnima) day of the month of Shravan.

Story & Mythology

Multiple legends: (1) Draupadi tore a strip from her saree to bandage Krishna's bleeding finger. Krishna promised to protect her — and later saved her from disrobing in the Kaurava court. (2) Indra's wife Sachi tied a rakhi given by Vishnu on Indra's wrist, which gave him the power to defeat the demon Vritra. (3) Rani Karnavati of Mewar sent a rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun, who honored the bond and sent his army to protect her kingdom.
