Significance

Nine nights dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine forms (Navadurga). Celebrated twice a year — Chaitra Navratri (March/April) and Sharad Navratri (September/October). The 10th day is Dussehra/Vijayadashami celebrating the victory of Rama over Ravana.

Story & Mythology

Goddess Durga fought the buffalo demon Mahishasura for 9 days and 9 nights, finally slaying him on the 10th day (Vijayadashami). Each day of Navratri worships a different form of Durga: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.

Puja Vidhi & Rituals

    Day 1 (Shailaputri): Invoke Kalash Sthapana, plant barley seeds in a pot

    Day 2-8: Daily puja to the respective Navadurga form with specific color, flower, and offering

  3. 3

    Day 7 (Kanjak/Ashtami): Feed young girls (kanya) as embodiments of the goddess

  4. 4

    Day 8 (Ashtami): Havan and main Durga Puja. Some celebrate on Navami (Day 9)

    Day 9 (Navami): Conclude puja, visarjan of Kalash, Ramlila finale

  6. 6

    Day 10 (Dussehra): Burn Ravana effigies, Vijayadashami celebrations
