Maha Shivaratri

महाशिवरात्रि

February 17, 2026

Significance

The great night of Lord Shiva — when Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance) and when Shiva and Parvati were married. Devotees observe a day-long fast and stay awake the entire night (jagran) worshipping Shiva. It falls on the 14th day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of Phalguna month.

Story & Mythology

Multiple legends: (1) On this night, Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga — an infinite pillar of light — settling the debate between Brahma and Vishnu about who was supreme. (2) This is the night of Shiva-Parvati's wedding. (3) A hunter unknowingly performed Shiva puja by dropping Bel leaves on a lingam while waiting on a tree — his sins were forgiven.
