Deities/Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Saraswati

सरस्वतीGoddess of Knowledge, Music, and the Arts

Iconography & Symbolism

Pure white complexion and white saree (symbolizing purity of knowledge). Seated on a white lotus or a swan. Four arms holding: Veena (stringed instrument — knowledge of arts), Pustaka (book — knowledge of sciences), Mala (rosary — spiritual knowledge), and Kamandalu (water pot — creative power). Calm, serene expression.

Story & Mythology

Saraswati was created by Brahma to bring order to the chaos of creation. She gifted the world with language, music, and knowledge. She is said to flow as the invisible Saraswati river (one of the three rivers in the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj). On Basant Panchami, she descended to earth for the first time. Unlike Lakshmi, Saraswati does not care for material wealth — she sits on a simple lotus in white, representing the purity and simplicity of true knowledge.
